June 8, 2015, Zurich: The Second Annual Gathering of Tibetans of Mixed Parentage concluded successfully in Zurich on Sunday evening after two days of workshops, guest speakers and informal evenings. Around 17 participants aged between 22-48 from Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, UK & USA took part and shared their experiences and ideas about Mixed Tibetan identity.

The participants acknowledged the significant growing number of mixed Tibetans around the world and made plans to build networks to ensure that there is always a place for Tibetans of mixed heritage to reach out to. At the concluding session of the gathering, the participants planned stay in touch and to continue to meet annually.

Participants also planned to organise smaller and more informal gatherings to take place throughout the year in different cities around the world, with an informal gathering already planned for 10 July 2015 in New York City, details of which are to be announced nearer the time via the Facebook Group.

Georgina Doji, 29, UK, a participant from last year’s first gathering in London and also a main organiser for the second said, “My hope is that the gathering will continue to be an opportunity for mixed Tibetans globally to come together and share their experiences in a network mindful of our own mixed heritage, as well as the place we all have in the wider Tibetan community.”

Kunsang Kelden, 30, USA, co-organiser of both gatherings, said, “I’m happy that the gathering has taken place again with another strong group of participants. The idea of this project is to create a sustainable programme that will continue each year, in a different city with new organisers. Six of us were at the London conference last year so it was the perfect way to build leadership. This year was about building leadership among us and deciding what our goals will be as a group. Gatherings like this are an opportunity not only to meet each other but also to listen to inspiring speakers such as Golog Jigme La who, on top of telling us his story, also gave us insight into the situation with mixed marriages inside of Tibet which gave us another perspective on what being mixed means for Tibetans in Tibet.”

The organisers for the gathering for Tibetans of Mixed Parentage are grateful to the Tibetan Youth Association in Europe for their help in Zurich and would also like to acknowledge Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay for the financial support from his office so that the basic costs of the gathering could be covered.
